1 in 5 New York Households spend more than half of their income on Housing.

What is Advocacy

When you advocate with Habitat for Humanity, you’re helping to change systems and policies in the U.S., and you’re working alongside people in your community and across the nation who care passionately about creating affordable homes and stronger communities. In places where smart rules and regulations about land and building are established, there is more access to safe, affordable housing. Habitat has been committed to ensuring families have access to affordable homes for decades. We recognize that we must continually work to create an enabling policy environment in order to realize our vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

The Problem

Families all across the United States are paying too high a price to cover the cost of home.  Everywhere you look—cities, suburbs, rural areas—the stability that home should bring remains out of reach for far too many families.

1 in 5 families in Saratoga, Warren and Washington County…

  • Spend more than half of their income on Housing.
  • Are denied the personal and economic stability that safe, decent and affordable housing provides.
  • Are forced to make impossible choices Safe homes. Nutritious food on the table. Health care. Access to good schools. Reliable transportation.

We understand the struggle, stress and pain of far too many families in our communities. And we know that those with the fewest resources are forced to make the hardest choices. Everyone deserves to build the foundation for a strong, healthy future for themselves and their families — no matter where they live or how much money they earn. Every family deserves the chance to thrive.

This is unacceptable.

It’s up to all of us—together—to help make the cost of home something we all can afford.

Affordable homes are built with ballots every bit as much as they are built with beams and drywall! And just like building, advocating for smart policies and systems is a way to create a world where everyone can afford a decent place to live. Today, nearly 19 million households in the U.S. are paying half or more of their income on housing. Over the next five years, we commit to mobilizing individuals across the country to find the solutions and help create the policies at the local, state and federal levels that will improve home affordability for 10 million people. And we know we can’t do this alone.
