On Nov 14th and 15th, Habitat for Humanity teamed up with local Nuclear Navy Sailors to replace bedroom flooring at the CAPTAIN youth shelter.
Since 1997, CAPTAIN has been committed to driving social change in Saratoga County, and beyond. CAPTAIN works to serve the principal needs of youth, individuals and families, and has developed into one of the area’s most recognized and highly respected volunteer-driven, non profit organizations. They empower people of all ages to reach their goals of personal growth and self-sufficiency, and provide shelter for those who need a safe place to go- a mission that Habitat for Humanity can truly appreciate.
Habitat for Humanity and CAPTAIN share similar goals, within the communities we serve- providing local, safe, secure housing for those who may not have access, otherwise. So, when posed with a partnership opportunity, how could we say no?! The CAPTAIN youth shelter was in need of some simple flooring renovations, which could make a big difference in the comfort and functionality of their living space. Utilizing funds from a Global Foundaries Grant, and volunteer labor, Habitat for Humanity was able to cover the cost of the renovations.
Across two days, 15 local Navy volunteers were able to install over 500 square feet of waterproof, vinyl plant flooring, and baseboard trim, in 2 CAPTAIN bedrooms. The task seems simple enough, but when you rip up the glued-on carpet to find an uneven sub-floor and have a strict 48 hour timeline, things have to move even more quickly! It was truly a team effort. Every volunteer worked diligently and quickly to make this a seamless process, all while exuding positive energy, cracking jokes, and enjoying some delicious lunches (generously donated by Dizzy Chicken BBQ). They even helped with a few other odd jobs that came up, including: rehanging some closet doors, painting, and replacing an old fridge in the kitchen. “It is nice to give something back to two organizations that do so much for our community [Habitat and CAPTAIN]. I work with these guys every day and we don’t really get a lot of time off, so seeing everyone here- happy and excited to work on their day off- just reaffirms what a great group we’ve got.”- Joe Jagiello
A big thank you goes out to everyone involved! We are thankful for the opportunity to work with CAPTAIN, and hope to develop the relationship further, in the future!
